Commercial Freight FAQ

Full truckload shipping is the act of filling an entire trailer with goods to transport.  The carriers arrange and secure the goods then deliver them to their destination.

People are usually surprised to learn that freight transit times are measured in days, not weeks.  Cross country shipments usually take 4-6 business days, and intrastate moves usually take 1-2 business days.

Since the typical pallet measures 40″ x 48″, 6 pallets arranged side by side would take up 12′ of linear space on each side of a standard trailer.  A full truckload can range from 24 to 30 pallets and up.

Ground shipping costs are considerably cheaper than air shipping costs.  When distances are short enough, it almost always makes more sense to choose trucks over airplanes.  If you are pressed for time and need to ship thousands of miles in 2 days, ground shipping won’t cut it.

FedEx and UPS limit parcel shipments to 150 lbs and 165″ in length plus girth.  Anything over that becomes a freight shipment.

Freight pricing is determined by several factors.  Route distance, fuel costs, density, weight, freight class, and specialized permits and requirements are just a few.
